A Spring Song

During a lengthy pre-nap spell (as I tried forever to sing Elspeth to sleep) I wrote this spring song--for Elspeth, but of course it's for all three girls:

If I could be any flower,
Maybe I’d be a hyacinth,
Blooming purple in the sunshine,
In the garden in the springtime.

Maybe I’d be a daffodil,
With my bonnet all of yellow,
Peering up at the sunshine,
In the garden in the springtime.

Maybe I’d be a sunflower,
Rising up to meet the morning,
With my petals all of yellow,
In the garden in the summertime.

Maybe I’d be honeysuckle,
Tasting sweet to the children.
Rambling over the swing set,
In the garden in the summertime.

But it doesn’t really matter,
As long as I can be a flower,
Coming up next to Elspeth,
In the garden in the springtime.

Yes, I could be a little earthworm,
Making tunnels in the wet earth.
Coming up to meet Elspeth,
In the garden in the springtime.

But it doesn’t really matter,
As long as I can be a flower,
Coming up next to you, dear,
In the garden in the springtime.
